Grateful Dave's BBQ - Galesburg, MI

Grateful Dave's is truly unique little restaurant. I am always inspired by little known restaurants with character and outstanding food made from scratch AND love. Dave delivers all of that and then some.

Last weekend I spent 4 days golfing near South Gull Lake Michigan. On the return trip I told my two buddies I would be willing to grab a bite to eat anywhere that "looked interesting". As we drove through Galesburg I saw the sign for Grateful Dave's BBQ near the corner of Route 96 and Michigan Ave. When we walked in we were greeted by massive taxidermy collection and the aroma of slow cooked meat! Before we even met the owner we were all stunned by the number and variety of mounted animals all over this little restaurant. We knew instantly that this was not your normal restaurant!













Once we were were inside the the owner came out of the back to greet us. He was more interesting than the decor. Dave was a former cook for The Grateful Dead back in the day. I bet he could of told us some torrid tales. He had a varied career which required him to travel extensively. He open this place because he wanted to settle down again at home. He has been in business there for 8 months.

We still had a couple hours on the road back to Chicago. Even though the place smelled great, I did not want to order the whole menu and enter a food coma. I have regretted that decision ever since. The three of us all had the Brisket sandwich, coleslaw, baked beans and the fried mushrooms. The brisket was dry rubbed for 24 hours and slow cooked. It was very flavorful and tender. The slaw was fresh, crisp and not over dressed. I really enjoyed the home made fried mushrooms. But the best part of the meal was the baked beans with a touch of heat and sweet in each bite. The meal was so good I bought some Brisket to take home to The GP. She was enjoyed it as much as I did.

This fall we are going back to the same location to golf. I am already planning on ordering food for take out. Maybe next time I will even take pictures Dave and his great food!
