This has all come up very quickly so I haven't been able to plan ahead as much as I would like. We are hitting the road tomorrow to drive to Seattle. Our plan is to take 90 to Sioux Falls for night 1, and Sheridan, WY, for night 2. From there, we're going to play it by ear b/c we want to take a detour through Yellowstone. Any recommended must eats for the road trip? We will have our dog with us, so we cannot dine at any sit-down restaurants. We also don't want to veer off too far from the road. Thanks for any quick replies. I'll be checking in from the road.

If you do end up in Sheridan, have breakfast at Oliva's Kitchen. Nothing spectacular, but a good notch above other places I tried in the area.

Check the breaded pork tenderloin thread for travels through Iowa.

Just wanted to add two data points during the road trip. In South Dakota, food and gas options on 90 were few and far between. We ended up stopping in Murdo, where we ordered a couple of hand formed burgers at Murdo's Drive-in. In the land of beef, these were simple but expertly prepared and hit the spot and provided nice variety to the common chains you see on the highway. The staff was very friendly.

On our last day, we drove through Missoula, where we ordered a pizza to go from Mackenzie River Pizza Company. Browsing through the menu on our phones, we opted for the Branding Iron - Italian sausage, jalapeno peppers, mozzarella and crushed red chilies. It was interesting to see the Italian sausage sliced rather than the crumbles I am used to seeing in Chicago. We weren't too impressed with Italian sausage as it lacked flavor. I couldn't really detect the sourdough flavor in the thin, crispy crust. Being spoiled with all the great pizza options in Chicago, this pizza didn't impress.

While we waited, we made a quick detour to Big Sky Brewery for my husband. He picked up a 6 pack of Scape Goat, which he recently had in Chicago. (maybe Haymarket? I can't remember)

Along 90 in SW Montana, the Bozeman Brewing Company is pretty alright. If you need a place to stay in the area, there's a bed & breakfast just east of town called Howler's Inn...they run a wolf santuarcy on site. It's an amazing place, and they make an awesome breakfast. If you lose your senses and decide to take US-2 across MT, don't miss Rod's Drive In in Havre, MT...root beer whips all-around.

If you are in for taking Rt. 12 through Washington, there is an awesome bar and restaurant in the tiny hamlet of Prescott, WA. The most delicious, flakey, moist, fried halibut, fresh-cut Washington potato fries, and a rich, creamy cup of clam chowder is the Catholic special on Fridays. How the hell I even ended up at this place is farcical, but I'm certainly glad I did. It's the type of place where the waitress implores the local slacker farm boy to do her neighbor's yardwork.

The best meal of my real-life Oregon trail adventure and. It to be missed on their Friday fish special.
