According to this board it doesn't seem that there is much love for Cancun...I'll be going with my daughter in a couple of week's time and was hoping to find some good local fare, we won't have a car, we are staying in the hotel zone, across from the La Isla Mall. My daughter's a chef (she say's a cook), we paid the tuition to Kendall I'll call her a chef, we want just good food and drink's no fancy stuff. Seeing that it's just the 2 of us I don't plan on straying too far from home base. Any suggestion's? Trip Advisor's been helpful but, I just don't trust it for restaurant review's. Thank you.

Cancun's (poor) reputation as a foodie mecca is deserved - especially in the hotel zone. Since severely damaged by a hurricane some years back (Wilma in 2005?), the hotel strip has rebuilt. Most everything there food-wise is designed to please drunken college students on break or older folks who are not exactly adventuresome.

Get a cab, go into town, and have dinner at La Habichuela. Yes, it's touristy as well, but the kitsch has a certain charm. Plus, you'll pass through town, thereby seeing something of Mexico.
