A few weeks ago, a group of us headed north to Crivitz, WI, for a long weekend. With kitchenettes in the motel rooms, we don’t eat out much. Since Wisconsin state law practically mandates prime rib on Saturday nights, we knew our plans for that night. I was able to convince the group to take the 30 minute drive to the Peshtigo River Resort Supper Club. My motivation was simple: the Peshtigo River Resort Supper Club is where LTH favorite Patty Tunk has landed.
Saturdays at the Peshtigo River Resort means the Meat Lovers Buffet for $12.95. The regular menu is also available. All meals include a trip to the soup and salad bar. The salad bar is really a boat. (apologies for the lousy cell phone pics)

The salad bar was what you’d expect to find in northern Wisconsin. The soup of the day was chicken dumpling. The dumpling was pretty dense, but the broth was fantastic. Several of our group of 12 went back for seconds.
Onto the buffet…there was prime rib, barbecue chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, green bean casserole, baked mostaccioli, sweet potatoes, fried chicken and ham.

Close-up of the fried chicken:

There was an attendant serving the prime rib and ham. The prime rib was pre-sliced and was dipped in what looked to be “au jus” before being put on one’s plate. I suspect that was to ensure it was warm and juicy when it hit the plate. I would have preferred sliced to order at my desired doneness, but that wasn’t an option. The ham was also pre-sliced…I can’t remember if it was also dipped in something.
My plate:

Those familiar with the ham that was at Patty’s Diner would not be disappointed. This was damn fine ham. The fried chicken was also excellent – lightly breaded, nicely crisp, yet juicy. I think it helped that I had a fresh batch. The rest of the dishes were fine, but the ham and fried chicken were the standouts.
Mr. X and I went back to the kitchen to say hello to Patty. She seemed surprised, yet happy, to see some moderately familiar faces. We chatted about the new gig and she commented how it was as hard as the diner was, just different hours. The night we were there was particularly challenging as one of the cooks was out sick, making the load even heavier. She politely declined a photo with us, but let me take this shot:

Overall, our group seemed happy with the meal. It certainly was a bargain. I hadn’t realized how much I’d missed that ham.

It was good to see Patty and I hope more people stop in and say hello. There is a good sized bar, a nice deck and the large dining room -- plenty of ways to kill some time in northern Wisconsin.
