San Diego-Tonight Only

I have an unexpected layover in San Diego tonight. I'm staying at the San Diego Hilton Resort and need a place I can get some great dinner. Might there be good fish tacos there? I'm open to suggestions. I'm traveling alone, so nothing too fancy or far. I've not been there, so walkable neighborhoods would be great. I'd like to see a little of the City.

I'm no expert on SD, but the "Gaslamp" area downtown is walkable and pleasant. The Spanish restaurant, Cafe Sevilla, is nice and has a broad, reasonably priced menu. I liked the zarzuela. You can get fish tacos all over. I'm not sure if I know a good one from a bad one, however.

Purplestar, I really like a place called Wahoos on Pearl Street in La Jolla. The fish tacos are dirt cheap and good there.

I'm assuming the chain Wahoos http://www.wahoos.com/ They have a location in Costa Mesa that I get to. Not too bad for sure, I like how you can choose either grilled or fried options.

I agree about other posters comments about San Diego being pretty white bread.

I'll be there in San Diego in a couple weeks, any suggestions away from the gaslamp area? Prefer ethnic or well-executed/regional items that I can't get in Chicago.

San Diego is not the greatest restaurant twon in America though it is certainly better than it was 10 years ago. If there is a don't miss place in San Diego, for me it is Prado which is located on the castle in Balboa Park.

The food there is wonderfully inventive as you will see from link below and the setting really makes it one of a kind here in the United States. Prado is every bit worth the insufficient amount of attention it gets as one of Southern Califorrnia's great restaurants.

If scenery is more your thing, the Marine Room in La Jolla serves good, though not highly creative food in a wonderful setting where the waves of the Pacific break right outside the Restaurant windows. Both seafood and beef dishes are generally well prepared. This time of year, the view is a bit of a wash due to daylight savings.

You should try Mama Testa's Taqueria on University Avenue in Hillcrest. Their menu is all tacos and is definitely a step above your average San Diego Mexican restaurant.

Given that you will be in San Diego during the winter, you also should check out a farmer's market. The citrus is incredibly delicious.

Given its location, the sushi in San Diego is very good. Sushi Ota on Mission Bay Drive in Pacific Beach is very popular (try to make a reservation for the sushi bar), but there are others that are just as good but less crowded. My recent favorite is in the Buga Korean Restaurant on Clairemont Mesa Drive just west of the 805. It has incredibly fresh fish at reasonable (for sushi) prices.
