Tito's Tacos was the final stop on my recent trip to Los Angeles so I was going to save this write-up for last, but I figure that I might as well strike while the
iron is hot.
And, as I have
already issued the pertinent disclaimers concerning this particular type of Mexican food, I will keep this very brief:
In
Tito's Tacos I have managed to find the perfect way to say my goodbyes to the City of Los Angeles. For nothing could be better than bumping down the last leg of the 405, on the way to LAX, with a big ol’ box from
Tito's on my lap. With my brother behind the wheel, I am free to concentrate on my food. And, so I do.
I--concentrate--on--every--single--cruchy--greasy--delicious--bite.
While sunlight floods the Rover, my childhood floods the brain, and it takes me way, way out ...
Out of reach from words.

my order -- two shredded beef tacos and a green chile/chicken tamale*

* The tacos at Tito's are fried-to-order hardshell tacos with a shredded beef filling, and on this visit I ordered one “regular” taco and one taco with shredded cheese. The green chile/chicken tamales are a relatively new addition to the lineup, and I find them to be quite good. The tamales are served with cups of Tito’s chile con carne “gravy,” which can been seen in the center of the box on the left. Also pictured in the same box are two cups of Tito’s pureed tomato salsa and one cup of Tito’s “hot sauce.” All orders are assembled in the boxes pictured, and once an order has been arranged in a box it is covered with a sizeable portion of fried tortilla chips. On this visit, and in my efforts to photograph the food, I had to remove two large handfuls of these chips. As you can see, a few chips remained.
