Kansas City cakes?

I could just PM the two posters that I know have some KC knowledge, but hey, why keep such good info private?

We'll be in KC on Sunday, and it so happens to be my mother's birthday. Any good suggestions on where to pick up a cake at the last minute? There were only be 5 of us, so I don't need a Costco sheet cake, although I may check the Costco there for smaller offerings if there are no better suggestions. Thanks!

Andre's on Main Street is one of the premier bakeries in town. Sorry, no address handy. Should be easy to track down though.

If you're looking for a high quality grocery store cake, Hen House, with several locations around the suburbs, is the high end chain in town. Comparable with Sunset Foods or Treasure Island at their peak. They have an outstanding bakery department.

Also, if you want to pay a lot of money for a cake, for no apparent reason, there is a Dean & DeLuca store in Overland Park, KS.

If anything else comes to mind, I'll post further info.

Our faves are Napoleon's (French) at 706 Westport Rd (816-931-4401) and Andre's (Swiss) at 5018 Main St (816-561-3440).

I've had a cake from Napoleon before that was excellent. Also, Cupini's, an Italian market and cafe a little up the street from Napoleon has good and very pretty mousse and other cakes. They also make fresh pasta that is good. One you might want to check out is Natasha's Mulberry & Mott on 39th street in Westport. Relatively new, so I haven't tried them myself, yet, but members of my family whose tastes I trust give them very high marks. Another good sign is that when I stopped by recently, they were closed because they were competing in the National Pastry Championships. --I just found her site and she graduated from the FCI in NY, and also specializes in wedding cakes. All of these places are in the same general vicinity.
