Milwaukee Bar Recommendations?

Im heading to Milwaukee for the Brewers/Astros game on Thursday. This will be my first time there. Looking for some good bar suggestions for after the game. Looking for something low-key and good music is a definite plus. Im staying at the Pfister Hotel, but am willing to take a reasonable cab ride. Thanks for any suggestions.

The Palomino Bar is only a couple miles away on 794 in Bay View. The decor makes it look like an Arkansas truck stop, and it has a slightly punk-rock vibe. The Palomino also serves up some of the best Southern food around there.

This deserves a longer post but I don't have time. I have said this before elsewhere -- At Random in Bay View is the happiest place on earth. Ice cream drinks, unintentionally creepy early 60's as remebered in the 80's vibe, more neighborhood than hipster. As for music -- I don't know what you think is good but I once saw a middle aged guy crooning along with "You've Got a Friend" across a flaming Tiki Love Bowl to his date. I think the adress is on South Deleware. I will post it shortly.

Other options: Von Trier's, a hyper- Germanic beer bar on North Avenue; Landmark Lanes -- a bowling alley plus three bars where it seems that all of drinking Milwaukee ends up sooner or later (near Von Triers); the Uptowner on Humbolt -- neighborhood bar with a nice mix of hipsters and workers and drunks, a little arty but not too. All of these are a faily short cab from the Pfister.

The only caveat is that I haven't lived in Milwaukee for some time and don't get out there that often. All of the above places are institutions so I expect that they are still up, running and worthwhile.

It's a neighbourhood corner bar that just happens to have the oldest bowling alley in the U.S. tucked away in the basement.

A caveat: If you intend to bowl, call ahead so that Marcy is sure to have someone on hand to set the pins for you.

If anyone wants to visit either of these Milwaukee bars—and they should—they’d probably be wise to do it soon. A (probably) reliable source tells me both may soon close. It’s no secret about Art’s, with the For Sale page on their website. And even if I’m spreading false rumors about At Random, I don’t feel too bad. It’s the sort of great old place that should be visited sooner rather than later.

Thanks to all for the recommendations. We ended up having a post game pizza at Zaffiro's, which was great and would have been perfect if the mushrooms had been fresh. Then on to Von Trier, which was pretty much what we were looking for: quite, low-key, decent selection. The night ended doing shots at Landmark and playing a few games of Galaga. Had a great time and cant wait to get back to do more exploring.

Also, I've recently recieved information that says that Art's has been sold to a younger owner. Hopefully they keep the look of the bar the same, but bring a little more life to the place.

The Bar I go to probably once a month(introduced to this gem by DaBeef) - is a tiki bar in Milwaukee - Foundation Bar - - Non-descript house on a Milwaukee side street- no real signage - once you step through the door you are in another world -

Many times I get the Grog - I dig collecting the glasses -



They also do a top notch Mai Tai - thought I bet all their drinks rock - and will rock you.

If you're going to Foundation, you might as well check out my favorite bar in the world--and the second oldest in Milwaukee--the Uptowner at Center & Humboldt. In continuous operation (and seemingly unchanged, except for one, often muted, TV) since 1884. Wonderfully cozy place with a very diverse clientele--the Yelp reviews from people who have wandered in randomly are hilarious. No food, but the $5 pitcher of Blatz almost counts, right?
