I know a lot of new parents want to make their own baby food for their children but aren't sure how. It's actually incredibly easy, but if anyone wants more professional instruction The Chopping Block and New City Moms have teamed up to offer a class on this topic.

Thank you for the link, but may I say, what a scam on Chopping Block's part. Are people so truly inept that they need to spend $30.00 and an hour of precious time away from their child to learn how to cook fruit or vegetables to the point at which they can be pureed?!

Little Thor eats only carrots from a jar, given the unknown nitrate levels in local carrots. Otherwise, his food comes from my kitchen. And my friends and family have found it no end of amusement that his favorite is Japanese Sweet Potato, not just the ordinary sweet potato, but Japanese Sweet Potatoes from Green Acres. I'm hoping this trend continues.

Do you have any more info about this? We haven't been giving Luke jarred carrots. And I'll certainly have to give the Japanese sweet potatoes a try, though he seems to like the regular ones just fine.

P.S. I know I can Google--just wondered if you had a specific link or article with particularly good information.

We were told by our pediatrician, and have confirmed through reading (see http://parents.berkeley.edu/advice/eati ... l#nitrates as an example), that carrots are naturally high in nitrates and should thus not be prepared at home until a child is 8 months to a year. Baby food companies can screen the level of nitrates in their food so it's safe to feed babies carrots from a jar. I will say though that I suspect the organic ones from local farms are pretty safe - I know Beth from Green Acres feeds her infant their carrots.

    HI,

What is very apparent to us, may not be to some. So if they spend $30 and hour, but their baby benefits greatly. What's the harm? Some people need all the dots and lines neatly lined up, it's great this course is available to them.

I think the Reader article, published a month or so ago, about the levels of lead and other chemicals in our soil and the effect on gardens and the resulting vegetables, was discussed on this BB, but I can't find it at the moment. Here's a link to the Reader's archive summary of the article; it costs $1.95 to read more:

    Here ya go

I would hope, if new parents are being encouraged to make their own baby food and perhaps to shop locally to do so, that this information's being made available to them.
