I know there are some good places in the burbs to get sushi ingredients, but are there good ones in the city of Chicago? I've gotten seaweed wraps and rice at Whole Foods, but am looking for someplace that could have a bigger selection and be cheaper. I don't necessarily need/want sushi-grade fish. I might just stick to veggies and imitation crab.

I get my sushi grade fish on sale at Chicago Food Corp sometimes - they're located at the Kimball exit off 94.

You can also check the various stores in the Argyle and/or Chinatown neighborhoods for much less than Whole Foods.

It's sad that Star Market is gone. That was my go-to place for all things sushi in the old days. I've always found sushi-grade fish difficult to find in the city proper, other than at outrageously high prices.

But if you have a car and are willing to take a drive to the burbs, I cannot think of any place better than Mitsuwa Market. If you take a cooler, you're gonna be quite happy with your haul. It's worth it, for us, to go once a month or so, when the mood strikes. The prices never fail to amaze me. And the food court is fantastic.

I also used to frequent Chicago Food Corp. Used to live down the street. Kimball ave just N of the Kennedy on the E side of road. If the little shop a few doors away is still open, (can't recall, but I think it's just north of there by a block or two on the E side of Kimball) they had a fine selection also, and was rarely as crowded.

Also, check for a Grand Mart Near you. They are popping up everywhere.

If you give a LOCATION, (Chicago is a big town) I bet you'd get more responses.
