This weekend, visiting my favorite discount organic foods outlet Deals and Steals (Yep, you read that right. It's a paradise of slightly past the sell-by date delicacies like organic almond butter and quinoa, etc.) in Northampton MA, I happened upon a bar of Seeds of Change La Dominicana Dark Chocolate. I normally stock up on Green & Black's(!!), but Deals and Steals is strictly a what-you-see, we've-got kind of place. Further inquiry is roundly discouraged, so I figured that this new bar would have to do.
And do it does. On my trip back to Chicago, it regrettably suffered a number of changes in temperature, but retained a remarkably smooth texture that lingers just long enough on the palate. Oh soy lecithin, I think I am supposed to disapprove of you? maybe? But the magic it, and the generous proportion of cocoa butter, performs in this excellent chocolate renders such debates irrelevant.
"How does it taste?" you're wondering, of course. It's labeled as 61% cacao, which, however much credence you give to that sort of thing, makes it relatively mild for dark chocolate. It's pleasantly bitter without being too tannic, and the orange essence in the recipe is subtle enough to bring out the fruitiness of the chocolate without being citrusy. Besides that, one of my quibbles is that it's pretty sweet, such that there isn't too much more detectable flavor complexity.
But that is merely a quibble, since I will admit to having scraped off as much as possible of the melty bits that escaped the wrapper during my travels. As I type, I have chocolate under my fingernails. Which procedure , you'll have to take my word for it, I would not perform for just any chocolate.
Besides being tasty, this Seeds of Change bar is apparently organic, kosher, vegetarian and contains the elusive elixir of life sought by Ponce de Leon. The latter is, of course, nonsense. But all the rest seems true enough. Does anyone know anything in particular about this Seeds of Change company? Their website seems to indicate that they are all kinds of gung-ho about organics and sustainability and etc, but
these days that does not preclude cleverly concealed corporate ownership.
Not that I am make allegations, I just wonder what people know. Has anyone else tried their chocolate bars? or any other of their products for that matter?
Because this La Dominicana bar was so delicious I may have to seek one out at *gasp* full-price. Oh how I miss Deals & Steals.
