I am curious why one would order mail order pumpkin pie instead of picking one up at a local bakery (or even making it themselves). Wouldn't buying locally would yeild a much fresher pie?

Here's why I'd mailorder: if I wanted one sent to my mother in Florida.

Good Point, although I think my MO in that situation would be to order it from a local bakery and have it delivered.

    Guys,

My youngest sister has been pleading with me to send a pumpkin pie. I have suggested she go to her local bakery and send me the bill. I did go to the effort of inquiring how to send it, which jazzfood replied intelligently. I find the request even more vexing as my Mom visited the week before and could have brought the darn pie!

Even though I know how to ship the pie, it just does make sense to do it. A pie which costs less than $5 to make, then spend considerable (for what it is) money on packaging and shipping just doesn't add up in my mind.

So I mailed oatmeal raisin cookies instead.

Geez, H&D are selling a deep dish pumpkin pie for $39.95 before S&H ... I hope my sister doesn't see this.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

I've heard excellent reports on Zingerman's baked goods by mailorder - both breads and pies. They make their case for the benefits of delivery on their site. Unfortunately, they don't offer a pumpkin pie, but the ones they do offer sound excellent and come packaged so as to look like something "special" - Matryoshka-style in a wooden gift crate and embossed tin, not just a pie in a box.

Per stevez's remark, does anyone know a good bakery in New Orleans?

    A quick search turned up:

Can't vouch of any of them, but check 'em out. Maybe they can help.
