Here's a few links on the internet:

Gentian is used for medicinal purposes, so call a holistic shop like Merz Apothecary (they may order it for you) or, believe it or not, an independent pharmacy in a Latino neighborhood. I make a holistic mixture for my cocker spaniel's naturally yeasty ears which includes gentian violet (different stuff, I know). The only place that had it OTC was Dietch's pharmacy down the street (1800 W. Chicago Ave.).

I recall that Sherwyn's had Gentian, but Sherwyn's a holistic/health food shop is no longer with us. But that gives me hope that others might carry it.

You might want to try the herb lady at Maxwell Street Market on Sunday. Maybe someone else can give a recent report of where she sets out her wares these days. It will help if you know the name in Spanish, better still if you're fluent. I don't know if she has gentian but she has plenty of other interesting stuff. Even if you strike out on the herbs, you can score some great tacos and cheap tube socks.

Merz Apothecary. Behind all the fancy soap and other piffle, they have a solid selection of medicinal herbs from both Western and Ayurvedic traditions. I bought gentian from them a few months ago.
