birthday cake for a severe nut allergy

Hi,
Can anyone recommend a bakery in the Lincoln Sq. area.....my friend has a SEVERE nut allergy.....if nuts have touched the cutting board she'll end up in the ER.

I could be wrong, but I think your chances are slim in a local bakery, since you're looking for a completely nut-free kitchen (at least, under those circumstances, that's what I'd want.)

Thanks for the links.........I would prefer to bake the cake myself but because of her allergies....a bakery cake is special and she really wants one! FYI......Sweet Honeybee Bakery, 1918 W. Montrose, says they can do it but for some reason, I'm a little skeptical. (I'm paranoid because I was in attendance when she went to the ER when the crust of her cheesecake had come in contact with some "nut dust" on a cutting board!

Did they specify they'd take responsibility for cross-contamination? I'd be shocked if a bakery made that assertion without being able to back it up, what with all the liability issues. I'd try calling them back and find out if they have a history of working around allergies and that they understand the severity of the issue; it's likely that they know they're doing...or a few probing questions should make it clear that they don't.

I can't blame you for being reticent, though - nut allergies are a particularly scary thing, and can sneak up on you, as other posters here will attest. We have quite a number of kids in our school that have severe contact allergies to various foods, which I'm glad to say our school is handling gracefully.
