Any good asian grocery stores near Oak Park or River Forest? I usually make a trip out to Richwell Market, Argyle, International Club(http://www.internationalclub.com/) on 40th street, and once in a blue moon Mitsuya near Woodfield Mall.

I'm filipino and my husband is chinese, so I would like to find one that caters to both. Thanks!

Have you tried Food Harbor on the west end of Lake street in Addison? Also, the Addison Caputo's (Lake and Mill) caters to the lover of odd vegetables. There are several Indian grocers in the area that may have some of what you are looking for. But the best might be Food Harbor, as they have a fresh fish market, cut to choice.
    Good luck!

Do you have to be a member to shop at International Club? Any details on the membership would be appreciated. Thanks!

I figured someone else would mention the Diho Market in Westmont, but since no one has, let me mention it as the most obvious possibility. It's not a terrible trek, and if you take Ogden back you'll go right near the LaGrange Trader Joes, and, if you want it, the flagship Home Economist, just up the street.

I'm also fascinated by this list, which includes a place in Melrose Park that would be closer than any of the other possibilities. NE Oriental Store at 114 E. North Ave. Anyone tried it?

(and would a Malaysian list have some relevance to someone looking for Filipino foods?)

I don't know the name, but there is an asian product store on Madison, east of Harlem, around Home ave or so. I have only been a few times to get rice noodles and chili-garlic sauce, and its pretty small, but seems have a decent selection.

You don't have to be a member - they may have discontinued the whole membership thing. I was there last week and didn't notice a surcharge, either...

I've also been to the little market on Madison - small, but a good selection of mostly Chinese ingredients...

Depending on what side of the Oak Park quadrangale you live near, there is a place in Chicago not *that* far. It is is Filipino place, I forgot the exact name, I think Asia Daily, on Central just north of Diversy. From my house in (far) NE Oak Park, it takes about 10 minutes to get to this place. Nice selection and steam table too.

Caputo's on Harlem has not a huge but not a small section either, of Asian vegetables.

im actually right across the street from the new penny's. im on the border of oak park and river forest. yeah i go to diho whenver i go to costco or yorktown. asian daily? im not exactly sure which store your referring to, maybe unimart?

i know there are a ton of filipino and asian stores in the city, but its a bit of a trip to go just for groceries plus the traffic.

oak park area - for caputo's, i find the chinese veggies to be mediocre. the bok choy and nappa are limp with in a day or 2. i think ill take a trip to madison. has anyone tried the filipino store off of mannheim in franklin park?

international club - ive been going there for a little over 2 years and have never paid a surcharge. i think they finally phased it out. but you can get a lot of things in bulk. =)

i am also fairly disppointed at how some of the grocery stores mark up tofu!! if i go to china town or argyle i cant get it for 80 cents!!! while its like 2 bucks at the other stores.

i miss los angeles!! you wouldnt believe the selection they have there and its like half the price!! if you ever go to california, go to ranch99!!! my husband haunts me of memories of this store and having dim sum in california! yikes i think im hungry! i think here, i basically keep my eyes open for one store where i could get everything.

I too lived in San Diego & then SanFran & miss the Ranch 99's immensly.

The Diho in Westmont is nothing compared to that experience, but FYI, the Diho has been taken over by new management & renamed "Whole Grains". Its still essentially the same store, however there are a lot of clean up/renovations going on. I stopped in there this weekend to pick up various vegs & found that the produce section has been expanded, there is a new fish counter (seemed to have a bigger variety than before) & a new deli has been installed. The deli was the most interesting thing to my mind - lots of prepared foods (mostly cold, I noticed kimchi, various salads, tapioca pudding but various dim sum were also available to go) & also a hot tray with char sui, whole duck, soy chicken etc. I tried a whole duck (nicely cut up & packaged) - $7 weekend special - made a nice weekend meal at minimal effort. This looks like it could be a good new weekday lunch option for the area. It looked like the ducks were being roasted in on site in a new rotisserie behind the counter.

Also, the store had a number of new "tasting tables" with various foods offered to try while you shop - I think these were mostly things from the frozen foods area, which looked to have been expanded as well as the prepared foods (I noticed a huge selection of various sausages & fresh noodles to go back & try).

My husband is Filipino, and we live in Oak Park; we're always on the lookout for ingredients. Unfortunately, you won't find much in or around Oak Park. My favorite place to shop for Filipino groceries is Unimart in Niles (on Dempster, just a block or so west of Harlem on the south side of the street). It's a jaunt, but you can really stock up. Their takeout is good, too; we recently catered an after-holiday party with their lumpia and pancit.

My husband also makes regular trips to Chinatown for supplies. He's been going to the same place for lichon since he was a kid. Fortunately, he's a good cook, so we usually don't go out for Filipino food. He made panakbit the other night with bitter melon he bought at the Oak Park Oriental grocery on Madison; that place is hit or miss, but it happened to be good that day.

The Filipino grocery in Oak Park (which is open -- I went there last week -- but which I have not been able to locate an adress for online) is called Kamal, and it's a few doors down from Robinson's Ribs on Madison. It's small, the selection is limited, but it's worth checking out.

Okay, I just stopped by the place. It's call Ramel's Oriental Market, and it's located at 932 Madison, at the corner of Madison and Clinton in Oak Park.

There are foods from all over the "Orient," but the owners are Filipino and a good percentage of the food is from the Philippines. I just bought a little jar of Ludy's Instant Salabat Ginger Brew (product of the Philippines).

    Hi there,
Just wondering if anyone knows of a good Asian Market in the near west suburbs. I never get up to the ones in Uptown often enough, and if I forget to bring a cooler, it's hard to bring back anything perishable.
    Thanks much for any info!

Just wanted to send out a thanks to all who responded. I never noticed the place on Madison--drive by there all the time. I will have to check it out (I can walk there!).
