Wandering through the Caputo's on Lake St. in Addison today I stumbled on a plain brown box filled with small green fruit attached to woody stems. Could they be? They are! Tiny versions of a fruit I knew years ago in Panama. We called them Ginips and bought them from street vendors. Slit the green skins with your thumb and pop the contents in your mouth. Suck the flesh off the center seed and enjoy. They remind me of a guava crossed with a citrus fruit mixed with a tamarind pod.

I was told Caputo's gets them every year but only for a very brief time...about a month. I haven't eaten one in nearly 30 years. Wow. #3.99/lb and they'll be gone soon.
