This recipe comes from a Taiwanese cookbook called Appetizer DIY. The cucumbers are sour and spicy. These cold cucumbers are good on a hot day.

    Spicy Cucumber
    5 Cucumbers
    6 Garlic Cloves
    2 Chili Peppers

    Seasoning A
    1 Tablespoon Salt

    Seasoning B
    1/2 Teaspoon Salt (additional)
    2 Tablespoons Sesame Oil
    3 Tablespoons White Vinegar
    2 Tablespoons Sugar

Rinse cucumber, then press the cucumber with the with the back of a knife (wide) blade. Cut the cucumber into small pieces.

Peel and mince the garlic cloves. Mince the red chili.

Marinate cucumber in Seasoning A for 10 minutes. Rinse with cold water and dry. Add Seasoning B, garlic and chili. Mix well. Allow to chill for 2 hours. Serve

This was a great dish. Is the recipe posted the "dialed down" version served at the potluck?

I make something very similar as a kicked-up version of the cuke salad served with satay in Thai restaurants (not as sweet, more jalapeno).
Basically, leave out the sesame oil and add sliced red onion.

I always make too much at once. It gets better for a couple days, then starts being a weird spicy pickle -- not bad, but it isn't the same dish anymore.
