    Hi,

A not-for-profit contacted me inquiring about a donation of 2000 hot dogs. While I can talk a good game, I am hardly a producer. The obvious local producer is Vienna. I know Fluky's retail brand is "Chicago style, made in Milwaukee." Who else produces hot dogs in our region I can direct someone to contact?

Meanwhile I suggested they check prices at Sams, Costco and Jetro to see where the best price could be obtained.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

Not sure how charitable they might be but Red Hot Chicago, Best's Kosher, Romanian Sausage Company, Kelly Eisenberg and Paulina Market, all of which are in Chicagoland, produce their own dogs, as does Usinger's in Milwaukee.

Ream's has a terrific house made hot dog, though the best little doggy I've had in quite a while has been from Meisfeld's in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.

    Enjoy,

While I would try Vienna first, just because of the sheer volume they sell in the average week they may be able to donate that volume without it being out of the ordinary (as I already assume they do this sort of thing all the time). I would also check with best kosher as their retail outlet is such a discount they may be be able to donate or provide a steeper discount than what is already available.

Best's Kosher is one of the Sara Lee brands. Sara Lee headquarters is in Downers Grove.

Also, Kraft Foods, based in Glenview, manufactures Oscar Mayer.

Both of these companies are much larger than Vienna Beef and likely to have corporate donation programs.

We have had a lot of positive experiences with our local Kraft plant (Claussen Pickle Co.) being VERY generous when asked to help on local causes. The key is to find the person in the location who makes the decision.

Speaking of regional hot dog producers.........

Was in Lincolnwood Produce the other day and spied Bobak's natural casing Pork Frankfurters. Not typically a pork hot dog fan, I prefer the headier garlic spice all beef Kosher style, I opted for the juicy snap of natural casing over the skinless kosher style offerings.

The 6 to a pound Bobak's dogs were juicy with terrific snap, but the overall flavor was too mild for my taste, even with a last minute addition of diced jalapeno from our garden.

I would suggest those looking for the perfect dog for the mild porky flavor used in Detroit Coney Dogs seek Bobak's Pork Frankfurter at the earliest opportunity.
