I love making cheesecake crusts with Oreo crumbs and they're ve bcome harder and harder to find over the last couple of years.

After it took trips to three different Jewel's last time I needed them, I decided to call Kraft and ask for help. According to the very friendly customer service rep, they no longer sell them.

However, my very observant co-worker overheard my conversation and said that on his last trip to GFS (the Palatine location), he saw them there. For anyone who doesn't know, GFS sells products for the food service industry, so a lot of bulk items. They are open to the public, and have no membership fee. We called GFS to confirm they have them, and they do- 2.5lbs. for $8.50. I'll be stopping there on my way home from work!

I guess they aren't selling them at the regular retail level anymore, just for commercial customers.

ETA: Grrr....I knew it was too good to be true- they're just broken up cookies with the filling, probably for restaurants or whatever to sprinkle on top of cakes....11:00pm and I'm headed back out to Jewel- I saw some chocolate wafers there in the ice cream toppings section.

I know that Kraft sells a 100-calorie pack "oreo" cookie that's a chocolate wafer, no cream. I'm sure it's more expensive on a per-ounce basis, but would probably be an appropriate substitute.

Another forum has options for this problem

I think I've seen the chocolate wafers near the ice cream as well.

It's not the manual labor that bothers me- I don't want the creme filling in my crust. I can just imagine what happens to that stuff in the oven. Not to mention what the texture would be.

I bought them, but those Nabisco Famous Chocolate Wafers in the ice cream section are $5 for 9 oz- I bought 2.5lbs of rejected Oreo's for $8.50 and they want $5 for those damn things? I was in a pinch, I needed to make the crust, so I bought them. :x

Thanks for the suggestion of the 100 calorie pack though. I'll keep that in mind.

Somewhere I found a forum that says Anna's, that Swedish brand that they sell at Ikea (among other places), makes chocolate wafers, but I looked at their site and the closest I saw was chocolate mint. Those would be good for certain desserts, but not the mocha cheesecake I made for today. I bet there's a copycat recipe out there for Oreos I could also use. Just make a big batch, crumb them and stick them in an airtight container.

The 100 calorie packs are probably going to be more expensive: they're also about $4 and the entire box is under 5 ounces.

    Here's an Oreo recipe

I have seen the Anna cookies at Big Lots on occasion at a fraction of the cost.

Seems to me that it would be cheaper to bake your own chocolate wafers for the pie crust.

    So does LTHForum.

I have, however, seen loads of recipes for Oreo crusts that call for crushing the cookies, creme and all. The filling is mostly fat and sugar.

"I have, however, seen loads of recipes for Oreo crusts that call for crushing the cookies, creme and all. The filling is mostly fat and sugar".

I have read - don't remember where - that the filling is basically Crisco and sugar. (I suppose with the requisite chemical additives for shelf life.)

Anybody have any real info on this? :|

Based on the ingredients of Oreos (sugar, flour, oil, cocoa, hfcs, baking soda, corn starch, soy lecithin, vanillin, chocolate) I would guess that to be pretty true. Retail Oreo pie crusts, for comparison, contain (flour, sugar, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, cocoa, hfcs, corn flour, whey, baking soda, salt, soy lecithin, cornstarch, chocolate, vanillin, preservatives).

Forgot to mention - the Aldi on Oakton is now carrying their version of the 100-calorie Oreo packs for a couple dollars a pop. IDK if this is better than finding another source for the crumbled cookies, but it sure beats the $5 for 6 tiny bags.
