I bought a big container of bruised pears from the farmers' market in Highland Park today for $2 and need suggestions for what to do with them. I'd like to try making pear butter, if anyone has a great recipe. It seems like an easy enough way to try canning.

    Suggestions? Thanks!

Pear butter is a great idea. Like other fruit butters, it is prone to scorching, so be sure you have a flame tamer and keep an eye on it.

    Other suggestions:

Pear-ginger pie made with little chunks of candied ginger and a little powdered ginger.

Tarte bourdaloue-- has a layer of almond cream under pears- a recipe you could find online, I am sure. Or buy a financier (I think they call it almond cake) at 3 Tarts in Northfield and served sliced with fresh pears.

Poach the pears in some glogg.

Poires Belle Helene, with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce

    Enjoy!

Pear Muffins- use dried pears and fresh for more intense flavor
Man : I can't understand how a poet like you can eat that stuff.
    T. S. Eliot: Ah, but you're not a poet.

Back when I was doing TCF delivery, we'd get 5-lb bags of pears with most deliveries. I made a simple puff pastry tart with sweetened pears and a bit of brandy sprinkled with a little Wondra flour, and then topped with a bit of blue cheese. I par-baked it and froze it.
