It's that time again, the time to put together a bunch of strange recipes for a holiday party. I have a Peruvian recipe that calls for Palillo, and they say Turmeric can be substituted.

I have yet to find a source online, I'd prefer a local source. I just might be lazy and use Turmeric, but I'd hate to back down from a challenge.

    Hi,

Not sure if this is of any help, on Devon Avenue they sell fresh tumeric roots. They look like a cross between ginger (papery exterior) and a small carrot (orange peeking out from underneath).

Not sure if it makes a difference but Penzey's has powdered Indian Tumeric. Retail shops in Oak Park and Naperville.

Turmeric is easy -- I've got plenty of that. What I don't know is if Palillo is actually different, and if I can get any without major fuss.

    Joel-

La Unica has Pailillo. It was on an endcap near the frozen goods with other Peruvian products. IIRC, it was marked $2.99. The English translation said "tumeric." Regardless, if you want this product, it's a fine excuse to enjoy a meal at La Unica. The Cubano and a steak sandwich hit the spot this afternoon.
