A friend of mine has this on their Christmas wish list. She cannot remember the name, only that they are usually displayed with the candy at Filipino stores. Can anyone help me out with the name of these treats? Thanks.

You could try Aji Ichiban in Chinatown. There are plums of all colors! :) Maybe not quite fire orange, but some close. Can you elaborate on the taste? More sweet or sour or salty?

I won't say they're precisely the same, but there is a Chinese version--indeed, I suspect that salted plums are common in many cuisines in east Asia--that would seem to be a pretty close match. You can find them in most Chinese or Asian groceries, sometimes in cellophane packs, sometimes in glass jars, sometimes in other packaging. Just ask for the dried salted plums. They go by various names and come from various east or southeast Asian countries. I've seen them in different shades of color, depending on the precise blend of salt, sugar, and other spices, but fire orange would certainly be one of them.

All that having been said, I have to add that this is one of those things--at least in my experience--where brand matters more than almost anything else. Most versions fall within a certain taste "range," but I've always been partial to a very specific taste that I've never found anywhere but in one particular brand. Makes buying harder. Good luck!
