    Hey,
I was just curious, can u buy live lobsters and then put them in a fish tank in your home so that you can eat them whenever you want fresh? Has anyone done this?

Doesn't it need to be salt water? That's not infeasible, there are plenty of marine fish tank chemicals, but it is a bigger pain in the neck to keep running.
Also, someone here noted that the longer that lobs sit around, the more they're feeding off stored energy, and they lose flavor.

Yes, salt water. And yes, sitting around will cause the muscules to atrophy: long tank time = inferior meat:shell ratio and less tender meat. Unless you have a very large tank and plenty of room for the lobster to move around.

too funny, can't tell you how many times on NYE the little guys have lobbied for the lobs to go in the tropical freshwater fishtank at our house....
I say no, they are happier in this big hot tub of spicy water!

Let's put it this way: I'd bet if it was feasible to farm lobsters outside of the ocean, somebody would be doing it. Googling turned up this really fascinating link: the PEI University Lobster Science Center, they have an ask-a-scientist option if you want specifics. Their FAQs state that each lobster needs 12 square feet of surface area to live, which pretty much cuts out having a living room in Chicagoland. :D

    I love the internet...
