We're having a wee party to celebrate inauguration day, and other than Ciroc Obamas (http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/membe ... MA-1277070) I don't know what to serve. Cupcakes with blue sprinkles, I guess. Any ideas aside from Hawaiian Pizza? I'm thinking three appetizers (not including salsa & chips, veggies) and one dessert. If only Obama was red, I could make Red Velvet cupcakes. Blue Velvet cupcakes are not appealing, especially if you've seen the film. Other drink ideas are welcome too.

If this thread is rejected because it's political, I apologize in advance!

We know Obama likes Spiaggia and Frontera Grill/Topolombapo. Could you make something from cookbooks by either author.

    Hi,

A friend held an election party earlier this year, featuring:

    Demorcratic Blue Martinis
    Mushroom "Yes We Can"apes
    SpanaHOPEitas
    "Dreams of My Favas" Fettuccine
    Kenyan Chicken Stew
    Barack-y Road Brownies

    Enjoy,
    Ronna

Why not make it easy for you and order takeout from all of the Obama's favorite restaurants? A buffet of Harold's fried chicken and Manny's and you could maybe steal the pertinent recipes from this article.

Or you could go crazy and try to celebrate the Obama's rich cultural backgrounds: make a dishes from the places he's lived: Satay, Kachumbari on grilled meat, Spam Musubi, Clam Chowder (for Boston,) Fish Tacos (for LA,) Reubens (for NY), and, of course Italian Beefs.

Obama is on the record as liking salted caramels. You could either order the ones he likes from Fran's or make your own, perhaps a chocolate version?

Still working on my inauguration menu ideas, but for an election night party I cooked up some food in homage to part of Obama's background:
Obamartinis (ok, not heritage, but fab with blueberry juice and citron vodka)
Indonesian Ginger Chicken (fab, easy, great for a crowd - let me know if you want the recipe)
    Coconut Rice
Roasted Carrots with lemon, ginger, garlic
    Chocolate Pots de Creme

Yes I would! Thanks! I may not serve it at the party (I'm thinking more of a short cocktail thing) but for a weeknight meal instead. I like fab and easy very much.

Ina Garten adapted it, I believe from Eli Zabar but don't quote me. It is very, very easy and good for large quantities, but requires overnight marination. You can find the recipe here:

If you're looking for another beverage, consider Iron Horse's Russian Cuvee. It was originally created for the Reagan-Gorbachev summit (and the Russian designation refers to the summit, not Iron Horse's location in the Russian River valley). I believe this or another Iron Horse wine has been served at every White House since then...I'll personally be uncorking a bottle to help celebrate the beginning of a new era and a Chicagoan in the White House!

That would be great to make for Halloween - you can buy a bag of gummy body parts. I think Willy Wonka sells them?

During the electioning, Natalie of Bake & Destroy made some Obama cake toppers. Might be worth it to hunt them up for the party - or email her or something, might be faster.

Obama to eat like Lincoln on Inauguration Day:

    http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2009/01/obama-will-eat.html

The luncheon's appetizer will be seafood stew in puff pastry -- scallops, shrimp, lobster -- served as a nod to the 16th president's love of stewed and scalloped oysters.

The main course -- duck breast with sour-cherry chutney and herb-roasted pheasant served with molasses sweet potatoes and winter vegetables -- is a nod to the root vegetables and wild game that Mr. Lincoln favored growing up on the frontier in Kentucky and Indiana.

The apple cinnamon sponge cake dessert is a nod to Mr. Lincoln's love of apples and apple cake.

To get the real Lincoln-Kentucky connection, pair all this with a nice glass of bourbon.

Recipes are in .pdf form in the above link as well.

I hope the lack of attention-to-detail in this menu is not a predictor of more to come from our new president's administration. The menu says sour cherry chutney, but the recipe calls for insipidly sweet Oregon brand bing cherries in a can. Gross.

Obama soda leads 7-Eleven into new era
    January 19, 2009
    BY Dave Benjamin Correspondent

If you are hosting an inauguration party Tuesday, then you might want to visit your local 7-Eleven to pick up your Obama gear.

Hot on the shelves is Jones Soda's Orange "You Glad for Change" Cola, which has Obama's picture on the label.
