...having a debate with some folks in my office. Could a high-end grocery or food boutique (like Trotter's To Go or Foodstuffs) survive or thrive here? I have my doubts (because "gourmet" places never do as well as I think they should) but, because of high-rise density and extremely limited parking, others here feel it would be a "can't miss" business opportunity.

    What do you think?

I'd be really surprised if it could survive, let alone thrive. I think most of the customer base for a place like that is closer to the loop (be it work or home), and thus would be better served at TTG, fox and obel, etc.

There is a place called Urban Epicure that's in Andersonville (on Berwyn) that seems to be doing pretty well. They've got prepared foods, gourmet foodstuffs, cheese, etc. They also carry Red Hen bread, which is convenient for me to pick up on the way home.

That stretch on Bryn Mawr seems to be coming around pretty quickly. I heard that there was a bakery of some sort going in soon. Francesca's seems to have planted roots pretty firmly & there's a new building going in (Bank ONe?). It's also close to the El so it may be convenient for commuters to stop in. I guess I'd like to think that it could work. :)
