I have that magic As Seen On TV gizmo The Thunderstick (insert cheesy thunderclap) and I love it. I baby it every chance I get for fear it'll one day die on me, and I don't think they make new ones. I have become an expert at disassembling it all the way to the bare motor clean and lube all its bits and pieces. I really like having it around. No, they aren't paying me to say any of this, and yes it's the only thing I've purchased from television that actually worked for longer than a few months.
I use it a lot to make smoothies in a blink and whip things in moments, but here's the catch: It comes with interchangeable blades, and the whipping one is a slightly angled disk. I've used it to whip heavy cream in lightning speed (pun intended), egg whites, and various foams. Meringues are dead simple with it.
With that said, most stick blenders
do not have the angled disk attachment that works super well for whipping. I have tried whipping cream with a couple other folks immersion blenders with some success, riding the "blade" near the surface to aerate the cream, but it's hit or miss. Most of them have a sort of chopping/mixing blade built in. Maybe there are some newer models out there with that flat disk, but I haven't seen one in my travels.
