    Hi,

I just got my postcard today announcing they are opening July 14th and close on Halloween.

Every year, I am going further to collect fruit and vegetables to eat and preserve. Von Bergens is evolving as my new favorite after my first favorite failed to open their farm stand last year. From Highland Park, it is a good hours drive.

Early in the season, they are a good source of frozen sour cherries direct from Michigan.

THey keep a spiral ring binder on the counter where you can request specific items. For instance, I usually buy 2-3 bushels of red peppers to make an Italian red pepper sauce. I put my order in the first time I visit in the season. When they are available in September, I am first on the list and can modify the quantity to what I need at the moment.

In October the place morphs into a Pumpkin Farm. They have a haunted house, a corn maze, farm tractor tours and lots of pumpkins.

As my haunts open, I will advise their location. I hope you will keep us apprised as well.

    Regards,

    Gobbert's Farm
    40 W. Higgins Road
    South Barrington IL

My favorite farm is Goebbert's in South Barrington, I think it's the best place to pick up fresh corn , it's picked daily right outside the barn. They also carry plants, jams, apple butter, and other fruits and veggies. I can't wait for corn season, The corn at Dominicks and Jewel has no taste next to the corn from Goebbert's.

    Hi,

Over the weekend, I was at a small party where they were making plans for a much larger party in the future. They were talking about this fantastic corn on the Minnesota/Wisconsin border. The day before they were sending a truck up to pick up a 1000 ears of corn. Why Minnesota/Wisconsin when we have great farms nearby?

I just made a few phone calls to learn the going rate for 1000 ears of corn:

    Mirai Japanese patented corn:

    Twin Garden Farms
    23017 Il Route 173
    Harvard, IL 60033
    815-943-7448

    $22 for 4 dozen ears

    (They suggested it was non-negotiable)

    Von Bergen's Country Market
    9805 Route 173 Hebron, IL 60034
    Tel: 815/648-2332
(Between Richmond and Hebron, just along the Illinois-Wisconsin border)

17 bags of corns of tri-color corn (65 ears per bag) @ $13/bag (Call one week ahead)

Normally: $15/bag up to 10 bags

Does anyone know the whereabouts of a corn stand that years ago was on Golf Road near 83 then moved to 83 near the Dominick's? It's gone and I don't know if they no longer are around or just moved somewhere else. They had the best corn!

I've been buying my corn this year at a little farm stand just south of Capt. Porky's on US 41. They have no name and are only open on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. I find myself in need of corn today. I'm aware of Von Bergan's Market, which has been oft posted by Cathy2, but I was wondering if anyone else had a farm stand recommendation located in the direction of the Wisconsin border where I can get a dozen ears of corn any day of the week (in season).

    Hi,

I don't know if they are open this year, because I have not looked.

On Route 41 in Lake Forest, turn left at the light for Route 60. Immediately look to the left for a small road, I mean you turn and there it is. If Bill's Farmstand is open, you go less than a quarter mile to a driveway and clearing. You will find a big tent with vegetables underneath. Last year, they had a cornfield adjacent to it maybe this year soybeans or something else.

You can also check Illinois Farm Direct for other options.

Cathy, if you get down to NW IN during the picking season, try Jansen's on the corner of Rt 6 & Rt 51 in Hobart, and about a half mile east of it, another one I think is called Johnson's.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the source.

What produce do they offer for self-picking?

Jansen's doesn't have picking, Johnson's does. But Jansen's has good deals on bushels of tomatoes, cabbage, onions, etc. I haven't been to Johnson's for a long time to pick, and have only picked strawberries there. Call them and ask what's up.

I just put a call in to one my local friends down there. I'll have some feedback on Johnson's for you tomorrow.

We went to Johnson's a few years back: they have U-Pick strawberries. They are more of a nursery/garden center than a farm, though they do have other vegetables (I think only the strawberries are u-pick, the rest are sold in the nursery.)

I would tend to doubt that they are offering deals on produce.

Hi- I am pretty sure my sister sells peaches to Jansen's. I would ask her what they have, but she is super busy with peaches right now, and would not get back to me if I sent her an email right now. They call it Jansen Michigan Fruit Market, so I suspect that they do not raise most of their fruit. They also do not have a website as far as I can determine. Hope this helps, Nancy

I just talked to my friend about Johnson's. They only do the u-pick on strawberries. They are selling half bushels of vegies though. Hot banana peppers were ten bucks and tomatoes were fifteen. Hope that helps you. I always get stuff from Jansen's because their prices seem very good, and in addition to vegies, their cherries, apples, pears, peaches, etc., from MI are always super. Hope this helps you.
