    Hi everyone,

I know if there is a community that knows where I might find this product, this would be it!

I love Malaysian chicken curry and crave it ever since Penang burned down in Chinatown. So after much research online I've identified 3 different curry pastes that have received recommendations but I can not find them here in Chicago.

    Chilliz Chicken Curry
Tean's Gourmet Malaysian Curry Chicken Paste
    A1 Curry Paste (A1=Action One)

I thought Broadway market would be my best bet. I found some Thai, Indian, and Indonesian sauce packets but none claiming Malaysian style curry.

Has anyone seen any of these brands here in Chicago?

    Thanks!

I haven't seen this (though I haven't looked) but I thought I'd chime in anyway since noone else had ideas. I have found Tai Nam on Broadway, just south of Argyle to have a very diverse and well-organized variety of goods from all over Asia. For example, there is a section for Indian food products and for Indonesian. You may want to check there if you are looking around Argyle. Broadway grocery has a broad selection (but I find their product arrangement a little less logical). The proprietor of Golden Pacific is very friendly--I often call before I go if I am looking for something specific and the proprietor has occasionally made recommendations for substitutions when they don't have exactly what I am looking for. You may want to call there and see if they have it or know of a place that carries it.

Thanks for the suggestions thaiobsessed! I will check out those grocery stores and report back.

On a side note I bought the Maesri brand Thai green curry and it was great!

I have found ingredient-by-ingredient recipes for the Malay curry but I'm hoping to not have to go there.

I can't help you with the ingredients, but there is a Penang outpost in the burbs. I believe it is the same menu and ownership at the Chinatown location.

Maesri Thai curry paste is one of my little BBQ secrets. I mix a can of Maesri with an equal amount of yellow mustard and use as a wet rub for grilled or smoked meat, it lends a little front heat with a nice lingering spicy heat, but is not overpowering. No one can ever tell what the heck's on the meat, they just think that it's a complex and slightly spicy rub. I typically use green for chicken and pork, red for beef, but experiment with other curry types as well. If you have heat sensitive guests go 2 or 3/1 on the mustard/curry paste.

Works equally well for grilling and Low & Slow.

    Enjoy,

Thanks for tip on Penang in Arlington. I'm not sure if there online menu is representative of the in-restaurant one but it seems to be missing curry chicken. However they do have some of my other favorites like Beef Rendang. =)

That sounds delicious! I imagine it having a sort of satay flavor. So do you lose the "curryness" of the curry?

Just a heads up in case anyone stumbles across this thread. I found a store in Chicago selling the Tean's brand of sauce packets. They unfortunately did not carry Chicken Curry but they had a lot of other Malaysian flavors! I asked the owner if they order next time from Tean's to make sure to check for Chicken Curry!
