I am attempting to make Marco Canora's Japanese Sweet Potato Gratin for Thanksgiving, but I can't find the taters. H-Mart doesn't carry them, shockingly, and though I used to get them at the Evanston farmers' market, that runs on Saturday. Does anyone know where else I can find these out this way?

    Thanks!

I was at Whole Foods on Halsted on Thursday and happened to notice them for sale. They were near--but not next to--other yams fairly close to the butcher counter.

    Bryn Mawr Fresh Market
    3318 W Bryn Mawr Ave
    (773) 279-8020

Call and ask for Ken. He owns the place. Others who answer the phone might not be good English speakers and don't know the produce as well as Ken.

I thought that was far out but now I realize I am pretty close to there. I can stop by on my lunch break and see what this place is like.

Is the produce generally good? I think I might stop there instead of Fresh Farms, if so.

It doesn't compare whatsoever to FF. It's a neighborhood place. He stocks lots of asian market items for his Korean clientele. He also makes food there. It's my go to place when I'm nearby, instead of driving up to Hmart.

if you do go grab some fried chicken wings, futomaki, and the okinomiyaki are good. His own kimchi too.

Tell him I said hello too. :)

Got 'em! Though they look a lot like the things they sell at Fresh Farms as white-fleshed yams, so I dunno what's what. But whatever, I got my taters and that's all that matters.
