We'll be going to visit some friends in FL in a couple of weeks. I wanted to send some steaks their way. I was torn between Allen Bros and Lobels. I figured with all the experienced pro's on here, I'd throw it out and see what you guys think. Or is there someplace better I'm missing? Thanks!

I'm not sure there's a right -- or better -- answer here. I send a few gifts a year out from Allen Brothers (for work) because I think their quality is very good and until recently, they were locally owned. I've ordered for myself from Lobels and thought the steaks were very good but not extraordinary, stand-out or memorable. Clearly, both are better choices than Omaha Steaks or something on that level.

Have you talked to a local butcher you like about this? I know my butcher Zier's in Wilmette can handle this type of business and they have terrific steaks that are actually dry-aged in house. I sent some steaks to a discerning friend a couple years ago and he still talks about how great they were. Maybe Butcher & Larder or Joseph's could do this as well.

Thanks Ronnie! Good butcher shops in Lake in the Hills are hard to come by ;-) And I personally wouldn't feed my dogs Omaha.....

Another option is McGonigle's in Kansas City. They are absolutely top-quality, and have done shipping for an awfully long time. Might be nice to be able to send some Kansas City steaks! :P

I sent Costco steaks from Costco.com. They were beautiful. Strips and filets. I also sent Jack Stack's. This was suprisingly good reheated on the grill.

Pat LaFrieda is something of a demigod among the New York culinary cognoscenti. His online store looks great, even if the prices look occasionally outrageous.
