As I've mentioned before, I like the Home Economist, particularly if you can get to the mother ship in LaGrange. But there are alternative suggestions in this thread

Wow - hard to believe it's been a year to the day since my initial post that Ann linked for alternative suggestions! I've done a lot of baking in the meantime and am anticipating a lifetime of perfecting...

At any rate, I'm still very happy with my every few month trip to Woodman's for Dakota Maid flour and the price has remained at the amazing 89 cents per five pounds. They also have economical 1-lb packages of instant yeast available (Fleischmann's, I think), but I prefer the SAF brand available at the Meijer's stores. Sam's Club and Costco and the like also have good prices on the larger yeast packages, but I've only found SAF at Meijer's and (much more expensively) online.

    Happy baking!

    Hi Ralpho,

What do you pay for the big bricks of SAF at meijer? Is it significantly less than the $5.50/$7 (red and gold respectively) king arthur flour charges?

I've only seen the SAF Red at Meijer and a pound lasts me about a year (I favor small amounts of yeast and long leavening periods), so I don't remember the exact price. I know it's less than the KA Baker's Catalog (even before factoring in their high shipping), so I reckon it's about $4.

FWIW, I think the turnover varies considerably at different stores; the McHenry Meijer seemed to have considerably fresher stock than the Algonquin store earlier this year at least. Still, I find no degradation stored in an airtight container in my freezer.
