Does anyone know where I can buy Oplatek (pronounced: oh-pwat-kee) in Chicago? It's the wafer that is broken apart and shared at Christmas Eve dinner in the Polish tradition. I would like to send some to my parents. I figured I would just wander around Avondale until I found some, but if anyone knows for sure where I can find it, that would be a big help!

    Hi,

I have bought them at the Polish Museum of America. Before packing one into an envelope, I break off a corner as if I were sharing it.

Last Friday they had their annual Wigilia dinner.

I would stop in your nearest Polish grocery/deli. Odds are they will have them.

    Where are you?

What a lovely idea. Thank you!

And I hadn't thought about the museum...will keep that in mind.

I'm in Logan Square...so I was thinking that the shops on Milwaukee Ave near the Basilica were a safe bet. Just trying to save some time (which I have little of, lately) by getting some solid leads.

Follow-up: They had it at the register at Endy's Deli on Milwaukee. $1.50 per packet.

BTW, if you see a customer there talking on his cell phone and he's blocking your way, DO NOT gently touch him on the shoulder to get his attention. He will start yelling at you, and it will kind of ruin the holiday spirit you originally felt when you walked into Endy's to buy Oplatek for your parents. :?

    Hi,

I bought them this year at Bobak's.

JeanneBean - if you go to a church with a Polish population, that is likely true. If not, you have to do a little looking around.

That is really a sorry situation. I can only empathize.

Oh, while I'm here, a minor correction. opłatek, the singular form is pronounced like oh-pwah-tehk. The "op-pwat-kee" pronunciation is for the plural form: opłatki. Usually, you just just hear the latter form since one rarely just talks about one opłatek, much like one rarely talks about one pierog.
