Well, Sparky decided that for Dad's birthday this year, we would go a totally different sort of way...

My daughter asked for the Farm Cake at the FamilyFun website. The pig cupcake and the two round cakes were fresh strawberry cakes with strawberry buttercream frosting. The chicken was a lemon cake with lemon buttercream frosting. The cow was a chocolate muffin (from WF) with the Cook's Illustrated Easy Vanilla Buttercream frosting. The hard part was putting the shoestring licorice on the silo and barn (since the pieces had to be of different lengths). I used melted chocolate as glue for the pretzel fence.

I think that I'll try to make something easier next year.

I just learned about this blog, Bake It in a Cake, which really should be called Bake It in a Cupcake. This person bakes all sorts of stuff into cupcakes, most of which doesn't appeal to me, but the general idea could be a way to make birthday cake more interesting.

For the jaded, this will be a delightful surprise.

My sister bought one on eBay for less than $5 with shipping.
