We're having a fall fiesta party this weekend and would like to serve homemade tortillas. If I can remember correctly, Nuevo Leon sells tortillas. Any other place I could find them? I'm willing to drive, too, for delish torillas.

Nuevo Leon, so far as I know, makes their own flour tortillas but their corn tortillas do not seem to me to be handmade, nor even house-made. I would add further that the flour tortillas they sell in plastic packages at the counter, while pretty good, do not have an especially handmade character and seem comparable to -- if perhaps a bit better than -- some of the better commercial flour tortillas available in the groceries. For real handmade flour tortillas go to Polo, on the north side of 18th, one block to the east of NL. Lardy and a bit heavy, but clearly handmade and delicious. Alas, it's a small place with limited hours, but perhaps they would sell you some.

Quite a few of the restaurants around town now have hand made corn tortillas. Perhaps, with an advance call, one of them might be willing to make a batch for you. Here are a few places you might try:

... Of course, another possibility is to make them on your own... Fresh masa is readily available, as are tortilla presses...

But I must confess, it's trickier to do well than one might expect! Amata and I had another stab at it not too long ago, with mixed results.... But it was fun.
