I tried Lan Chi Chili Paste at friends house and thought it was one of the best tasting store bought chili oil / paste, but I have not been able to find in a brick and morter. And online there seems to be limited availablity and high shipping costs. Is there any Asian Market in Chicago or suburbs that you guys know carry Lan Chi Chili Paste?

I am 79.7% sure they carry it at Viet Hoa. As you walk in go straight down the first aisle, should be just about to the end below eye level on the right.

Fresh Farms on Touhy had it today when I was there--we picked up a jar to try it out.

The last bottle I got was at the MarketPlace on Oakton. Their inventory changes frequently, so I can't guarantee it is still there. Even though the ingredients are very simple (mashed garlic and red pepper), I love LanChi. When you are in a hurry, a half teaspoon will make any dish pop.

I found Lan Chi chili paste at Thương Xá Mỹ Á (Broadway Supermarket) last week.

As I recall this brand used to be fairly common but it must have been somewhat squeezed out of the market by all the new labels. A whiff of the open jar brought me back to my early attempts at Asian cooking. It's a good ingredient—a smooth paste packing a full, round chili heat with a restrained garlic presence. As soon as I got the jar home I made a simple dish of asparagus and tofu with oyster sauce, ginger, sherry and some Lan Chi. Darn good and easy as can be. Thanks for mentioning this trusty old ingredient. I'm going to enjoy working through my jar.

    Gary,

I've never seen the Lan Chi Chinese Salad Dressing before. Did you by any chance try it?? Now I'm hooked!

OMG, this forum is the best. I started here looking for chinese grocery stores on my way home from work (between Schaumburg and the city) hoping to not have to head to Argyle or Chinatown, where I usually find this product. And plugging "lan chi chili paste" into regular google brings me right back here.

I love love love this product. Plus, I regularly bring multiple jars home to my parents in North Carolina, who have a hard time finding it anymore.

Joong Boo, here I come! Hope you still have it!

ETA: Follow up, Joong Boo still has it! $2.79/jar.

They sell it at Tai Nam Market--on Broadway just south of Argyle. Under the tori gate, at the back of the parking lot.
    A great market.
