So my beloved Microplaner has gone missing, not sure how. I had it for quite a while, no idea which model it was. When I go online I'm overwhelmed by how many different models they have these days, there's no way there were that many back when I got mine.

Looking for advice on what's the recommended staple model to go with these days. Primary uses are citrus, garlic, hard cheeses, etc. My first thought is the Classic 40020 but then I see the 46020 Premium which claims (and looks) to have a better handle for a few bucks more. And then there's all these new (to me) wider paddle-like models. It's all so confusing. I'd like to choose, but choose wisely - so soliciting input from anyone with experience, recent or otherwise, with the universe of Microplane models. Thanks.
Objects in mirror appear to be losing.

I'm not up on the latest models. I've had mine for a long time, but I've found that the wider paddle models are better for things like grating hard cheese while the smaller, narrower models give me much finer control when I'm grating lemon/lime/orange zest. Unless you only grate small amounts of cheese, you might want to consider getting both kinds.

I too have had a long microplane for years. It's the older "classic" model. I recently bought the paddle kind at the Spice House (I have a problem with impulse purchases there, I confess), and I've found it is, as Steve says, very useful for grating hard cheeses and the like. I like it for zesting as well because of its larger curved surface. That said, I think the long one is better for garlic and nutmeg grating and does of course work fine for zesting and cheese grating.

I like the wide ones because I grate many things with the microplaner leaning against the table. The narrow is a bit hard to do. Have you considered the Jamie oliver one http://amzn.to/2aehlOI? I'm not recommending this because I like him; in fact, not the biggest fan, but it does have all the features I like like 2 way graters and the little plastic near end to not slip in case you grate stuff with the planer leaning against the table.
