Once again working a recipe that is calling for, either, Texas Sweet or Walla Walla onions.

I will be out and about in the city today and I am looking for recommendations for a produce market that might carry them.

    Thanks in advance!

Sweet onions are available year round at most stores.

Walla Walla onions and outdoor Texas onions are not in-season and you will not find them this time of year.

Best consistent source for FRESH onions? I have a hard time finding onions of any breed that aren't harsh, overly sharp, and unpleasantly spicy in flavor/aroma, which to me signifies an old onion.

Since true Vidalia onions are not in season yet, I have found a reliable substitute in Peruvian onions that are Vidalia shaped. These are not the big round Peruvian so-called sweet onions but rather are flattish, flying-saucer-shaped like Vidalias. Believe it or not, the one source where I have consistently found these is at WalMart, in particular at the big WalMart on Touhy near McCormick Blvd. I have also seen mesh bags of them, smaller, at Jerry's on a hit or miss basis. Good hunting!

    Thanks for the tips!

After talking with a local produce expert I have found out they are indeed out of season.

I did find some nice big sweet onions at Whole Foods. The other local stores had small anemic looking ones. The recipe was calling for one pounders.

Maybe it's a little out of your range, but GNR Fresh Farms on Touhy always has the flatter "Vidalia/Maui" style onions in stock. I saw some big ones today, right next to the yellow onions.

Fresh Farms keeps four types of very large top quality onions available. Sweet, Spanish, Red and white. The sweet can be any variety and are invariably very good. The Spanish are huge with almost perfect wrappers. Spanish I see in our local stores are small and just terrible quality. Sad State(PUN) of affairs but I have to drive to Illinois to get quality onions!

True Vidalia onions were available at Jerry's the other day: nice, fresh, fairly large, flattened spheres with the little stick-on tag that included the word "Vidalia".

That is a really good price, Dave. Genuine Vidalias were $0.79 a pound yesterday at Marianos. --Joy

I saw their tent set up in the parking lot of the Ace Hardware on Waukegan Road in Glenview this afternoon.

They used to set up a distribution point at my old job in Hodgkins. As a thank you they would leave a few sacks in the lobby for the employees.

Last year I grabbed a bunch and made my first French Onion soup and in my opinion, it rocked. :)

Just last weekend at my local co-op...
