Has anyone ever bought meat at Butera? They are advertising standing rib roasts at $2.99/lb this week. Can this be real meat?

    Steve,

There are four main grades of beef, prime, choice, select and standard and, within those categories, additional variables for marbling, maturity and carcass quality.

Quality and Yield Grades for Beef Carcasses

$2.99 for rib roast sounds a good deal, but if the meat is select or standard you may be using the majority of it for roast beef hash the next morning.

I've been quite happy with Costco's bone-in beef rib roasts, choice grade, reasonable price.

    Enjoy,

I made the trek to a Butera today (I had to get some other staples that they had on sale for very low prices) and asked the butcher about the $2.99 rib roasts. She said that they were "Inspected. Almost as good as select." That was all I needed to hear. I steered clear of the meat counter. We're having a rib roast for the holidays and I decided it wasn't worth skimping on the quality of the meat just to save a few $$$. In fact, I'm probably going to go to the other extreme and get an aged prime rib to cook up. I don't know what I was thinking for even considering bargain meat for a special occasion.

I would have had trouble keeping from laughing in her face. How did you do it? Or did you.

No. I laughed, said no thanks and walked away.
