During a visit to Istanbul Market, I bought a box of something labeled "chestnut candy" with imagery that implied wrapped candies. Opening the box, however, I found a jar of marrons glaces, in syrup.

    Any suggestions for using these?

How weird! I just came to this site to post an inquiry about how to find these! That is fabulous that they have them there. I will probably go tomorrow. I am dying for marrons glaces but I already spent 50 bucks or so on whole ones for my sister's Christmas present and I don't want to shell out any more.

OK, how to use them? I put them over ice cream or similar. Or eat them straight from the jar.

I just read on another board that Fauchon sells jam (apricot?) mixed with these. That sounds like it would be good too, if not on toast then in a crepe filling or something.

I was just Googling for some more ideas and found the whole ones for sale at Amazon, for a discount to what I paid, if anyone's interested:

The ideas I found for using the pieces were not earth-shaking so far. Mix 'em up with whipped cream and stuff. I guess they are so good, people don't fool with them much.

Edited to add: I managed to go by Istanbul Market earlier this evening and get a few jars. It looks like a very nice product. The first thing I'm going to try is pouring the syrup out of one jar, replacing it with brandy or bourbon, letting it sit for a couple of days and then flambeeing to serve over ice cream.

I chatted with a man working there who asked how I'd heard about the place. I told him about this board and mailed him the URL, so maybe he'll show up here. It's a very nice store and I hope they are doing well; it's not at all visible from the street.
