Boston Fish Market Des Plaines

Is anyone familiar with this Fish Market in Des Plaines? Any opinions would be helpful, ie quality. freshness etc? It looks good...

I stepped in here not too long ago. They're a wholesaler and while open to the public, I wasn't that impressed with what they had. First, not very good customer service, the front of the shop seems like an afterthought compared to the wholesale operation they have going there. There's this large room behind the counter where they're processing all this fish presumably for restaurants and other retailers, and man, does it smell awful. The guy behind the counter barely spoke english and none of what they had displayed had any labels on it except for price. What I did recognize wasn't much more than you'd find in a good independent grocer, IMO. Still searching for a great fishmonger in the NW burbs...

Not just a fishmonger, but Tensuke has a fantastic selection of fish and fish parts. (Info from G Wiv here.)

Supreme Lobster and Seafood Company in Elmhurst is very nice.

From Schaumburg shouldn't be too hard to hop on the Eisenhower to South 83, turn right on North Avenue and right into their lot - sign is pretty easy to see. There's a convenient U-Turn lane for getting out to go home also.

Of course Whole Foods usually has nice looking expensive as heck fish too.

I see a Supreme truck outside Blackbird on most mornings, and that's just about as good a recommendation for their seafood as you'll find. I will have to check them out next time I'm out that way. Thanks for the rec.

In Chicago you have many options.

I'm not sure Supreme is as good as those, but it's great for us Suburbanites.

A Cook's Guide to Chicago says it doesn't have the huge variety of Isaacson's or even Captain Alex, but it's a fine establishment if you live west.

Thanks, Nancy, I try to take advantage of all the great places in the city. But I also keep a mental list of places to check out during my occasional suburban wanderings, and now Supreme is on it. (Especially after they went through the trouble to provide this for my viewing pleasure! )
