I don't see where it says the one on Elston is closing - it says "business as usual" at the stores not mentioned...

The image doesn't say so itself, but the hyperlink does. Check out the Chicago Tribune. Well maybe its partially misleading since its under an Elston link.

Elston is not mentioned (thank goodness, since that is where I shop!).

There are going to be a lot of Cub closings in the coming months as SuperValu begins to consolidate the Albertson (Jewel) acquisition. Since Jewel is the dominant supermarket in teh region, the Cub stores will be the ones getting the ax in this market.

What boggles my mind is that they just finished remodeling the Bedford Park location a month or so ago.

In order to get antitrust clearance to acqiuire Jewel, Super Valu had to divest Cub stores that compete with Jewel stores. These Cub stores were sold to a private equity firm, which is doing the store closings. Super Valu no longer has any connection to Cub in the Chicago area.

Yikes, any word on Skokie? It's literally across the street (Touhy) from Jewel.

Given the way private equity firms tend to operate, I would be very surprised if any of these Cub stores will still be open under the Cub label two years from now. I expect that all of the stores will be sold to other retailers but not necessarily grocers. The new owners may well be working on deals with some of the big box grocers that are expanding in the Chicago area. Obvious candidates for one or more stores but not the whole package include Kroger's Food 4 Less division, Marsh, Meijer's and Woodman's.

Cub Food stores would be too small for a Woodmans (unless they merge the Crystal Lake Cubs with the space that Walmart will be vacating in Crystal Lake in early 2007). Ditto for Meijer's which is also into the "thrifty acres" type superstore.

Marsh is undergoing corporate reorganization as they fired about half the senior management. I understand that they are looking for a buyer for the entire chain.

I think that many would be bought up by independents. However, many of the old Eagle Stores (BK in 2002) have finally been absorbed in the market by many of the independents.

Who knows? They just converted a shuttered grocery store in McHenry into a Sears Grand store.

I just realized that I made a mistake in my previous post. The Cub foods in BRIDGEVIEW on Harlem Ave was recently remodeled and open. I stopped in there yesterday and realized that I confused the one on Cicero in Bedford Park. When I spoke to a lady at the service desk she helped me clairify and said that she isn't sure if anything is going to go into the space or not.
