I have a dental surgery impending, one of what has been many in my life, and I will probably be eating squishy things for about a week afterwards, when the sutures come out of the roof of my mouth. Pleasant, huh?

Sutures combined with the nausea that accompanies painkillers means I generally dont' want much to eat. One of the things that I've been able to stomach in the past is tapioca pudding with mashed banana mixed in.

That being said, is there any readily available commercial, get it at the grocery store form of tapioca pudding worth noting other than Jello brand? Sadly, my grandmother is no longer around to make me her homemade version, this time.

I generally shop at Dominick's, if that helps, but also have access to Jewel, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods....and pretty much anything else in the Bucktown/Wicker Park/Lincoln Park area.

TJ's has a house brand Tapioca Pudding that is good - nice vanilla flavor, big balls of tapioca. It's in the dairy section near the yogurt and sour cream. 1.99 for a 1 LB container I think

Good luck with your surgery, I don't envy you a bit.

My kids are fond of the Kozy Shack brand, which we get at our local grocery store, in their lunch boxes.

It's known in our house as "booger pudding." The name doesn't stop us from eating it.

I'll second the Kozy Shack brand...you can usually find it at Dominick's, Cub Foods, Meijer, Whole Foods and Treasure Island.

Also...when I had my wisdom teeth removed a few years back, I drank Ensure to make sure I got enough vitamins and stuff while I was looped out on painkillers. It's not as bad as the cans might lead you to believe, though I'd stick with the regular flavors (vanilla, chocolate) and avoid the toxic-tasting Butter Pecan.

I'm actually kind of fond of Jewel's pre-made stuff in the deli case.
    Nice vanilla level, good texture.
It's a lot more healthy than other snack foods -- low in fat, not even that much sugar, IIRC.

Snag a free plastic spork, and you can be in tapioca bliss before reaching your car.

But Ensure? I remember getting a free mini-can in the mail some years ago, and coined a new ad phrase for them: "Putting the chalk back in chocolate!"

    Hi,

I once read in a book on British nursery food that Tapioca was also referred to as 'Fish eggs and glue.' I buy tapioca and just follow the instructions to make it from scratch.

If you're in the mood to splurge, Trotters To Go (on Fullerton) often has a house made version (wiith various exotic fruits sometimes added ) , that can be very good. Good luck with your surgery.

Yeah, Ensure. I'm not saying it tastes great, but it does have a bit of protein and other nutrients if you're not eating solids for a while. If you think the chocolate is bad, the butter pecan will change your mind.

And if you want to boost the calorie content - most liquid diets are deficient in calories and nutrients, make a milkshake of ice cream and ensure. An 8oz shake is about 450 cal.
