Does anyone remember No-Bake Cookies from their childhood? Boiled, with oats, cocoa, peanut butter, vanilla, milk and sugar? Then dropped
and left in the fridge to firm. I called my mom for her recipe, but it was by memory only, which means, a little spotty. Any good recipes out there? I have a craving.

Related discussion here. Many of the recipes on-line call for peanut butter, which wasn't in the version I made in second grade. This recipe is close to the one I remember, though it's even better if you add a cup or so of coconut.

I never could figure out why these were called cookies instead of candy. Maybe the oatmeal?

mmmmmmm, some of my favorite cookies. I always make them with peanut butter, and i like the salt/peanutty taste it adds. We renamed them Poop Cookies, for obvious reasons. It fits much better than No Bake, I think. There are a lot of different recipes, but they all seem to have cocoa, sugar, milk, butter, oats(quick oats work best), vanilla, and peanut butter. Here's one I use:

    1/2 c. milk
    2 c. sugar
    1/2 c. butter

bring to boil and continue to boil for exactly 3 minutes.

    3 c. oats(quick)
    1/2 c. peanut butter(use some w/ a little salt)
    1 t. vanilla

have all of this mixed together thoroughly, then when cocoa mixture is ready, pour it over this. let sit for about 30 sec., then stir and scoop cookies out onto wax paper or whatever surface you like.

It's hard to get the texture right, sometimes they can be gritty when they cool. I hear the 3 minute boil makes them come out right, although its been a while since I've made them so I can't remember.

If you look up 'no bake cookies' on recipezaar.com there are several different versions.

poop cookies, very fitting! generally, this is the similar to the recipe my mom uses (by memory). does 2 cups of sugar seem excessive? i'm wondering if i could cut it down to 1 cup?

yeah 2 cups is a lot. thats why I don't make these that often. You could try to cut it down, but I don't know if they would set up right. Try it, and if it works let me know.
