Bye-the-bye, I should have been clearer immediately upthread. The Oster is in my Montréal kitchen; the DeLonghi is in my KC kitchen. I couldn't find a DeLonghi here in Montréal, so I did some research into what I *could* get and the Oster looked best. The DeLonghi is a bit better, in actual fact, but the Oster serves just fine.

Believe it or not, B & D do NOT sell appliances in Canadia. Just another of those surprizingly weird disconnects between Us Up Here and Our Neighbors to the South.

I ended up with the Breville. The Krups was 2" wider, and wouldn't have had enough clearance (and they didn't have it at the store I went to anyway).

Seems like overkill for when I need to make 1 Pop-Tart, but my old one was definitely too small for many of the tasks I wanted it to accomplish. I doubt I'll be making pizza in it, but I think I could!

Hi- In April of this year, I gave a glowing review of my Krup's FBC2 toaster oven. Before I bought it, I read all of the reviews on Amazon, and about 90% of them were positive, and about 10% of them were very negative, I decided to take my chance, since most of the reviews were very positive, and Consumer Reports and Cooks Illustrated magazine both liked this particular toaster oven.

Last night, I went out to the kitchen to make some toast. The toaster would not work, and I noticed the circuit breaker had shut off the oven. When I flipped the circuit breaker, and turned on the toaster oven, there was lots of noise, and smoke coming out of the outlet. I think the toaster oven got too hot. When I plugged a lamp into the same outlet, it worked just fine.

Since I have had the toaster oven for over a year, it is no longer under warranty. I got a good deal on it at Macy's, and only paid $120 for a $200 toaster oven, but that is a lot of money to spend on something that is only going to last 16 months. Many of the other unfavorable reviews on Amazon mentioned that the oven got too hot, and in some cases caught on fire. Apparently some times the toaster oven just starts on its own, and Consumer Reports actually recommends that you unplug the oven when you are not using it. Unfortunately I did not do this. I recommend that nobody buy this toaster oven. Thanks, Nancy

That's not good. I bought the Krups in April, and have loved it so far...here's hoping it doesn't burn my kitchen down.

Hi- I would recommend that you unplug the Krups when you are not using it. That is what they recommended in Consumer Reports. The only reason the oven did not catch on fire, was because the circuit breaker kicked in. When I turned it back on, and the oven made all kinds of noises, and smoke was coming out of the outlet, I was worried I had fried the outlet. At least my outlet still works.

Does anybody have a toaster oven that they love? The last toaster oven I had was a Black and Decker, and it only lasted me for 3 years, and I was hoping this one would last me at least 5 years. I might just break down and buy myself a toaster that can handle bagels. At least I an not out much money if it dies on me. Thanks, Nancy

We use the DiLongii toaster oven, with great success. And no fires! (Target, I think...)

But we also have a Ham. Beach Michael Graves model 4-slice toaster, also from Target. It's very slow, but has a bagel switch, huge slots, and never burns, ever. (A top rated Cook's choice.) It's also very cheaply priced.

I recently bought the Breville and am kind of in love with it.

Funny. I've just been studying the plans of Graves' Portland Building since I'll be in the Pacific Northwest this fall and realize that it's a very important building as far as postmodern architecture goes. I feel obligated to see it firsthand given its historical significance, but I can't shake the opinion I had when I first learned about it back in high school. It is one ugly building. Though I don't own one, the toaster for Target is probably my favorite Graves design.

Hi- I have been reading some of the reviews of toaster ovens on Amazon, and have discovered there is a glitch in toaster ovens that have touch pads, as opposed to knobs to adjust the temperature. All of the toaster ovens that have the touch controls, seem to be much more likely to short out, get too hot, and turn on by themselves. Even my Krups owner's manual recommends that you unplug the oven when you are not using it. I might submit a post to Freecycle asking if anybody has a wide slot toaster. I can make do with that for right now.
    Hope this helps, Nancy

Anyone know of a repair person in Chicago.

We have a 20+ year old Black & Decker Toaster Oven that died today. My husband doesn't want to replace it. I think he may feel differently once he hears the cost of a repair.

Seconded!! There's a Black & Decker outlet at the Pleasent Prarie outlets just across the border. Another friend found a good replacement for a B&D that died. I think your charming spouse is in for sticker shock if he wants a repair.

If it is the coil, you could order it and he can replace it. There are a number of online locations for locating spare parts.

    HI,

I have had the same clock radio next to my bed since 1972. The original died a long time ago. I bought its twin on e-bay. When the twin died, I bought another new-in-the-box off e-bay, too.

E-bay is a great source for finding twins of favorite products, especially if it was a mass produced item.

i'm thinking of splurging on the breville toaster oven, which cook's illustrated has said is the rolls royce of toaster ovens (my interpretation). i have a crappy cuisinart classic which has been a lemon from the beginning. does anyone have the breville? i'd love more feedback before i spend $250. this is an appliance i use at least once a day on all settings-oven, toaster, broiler, so it would be money well spent if it's as great as it seems. thanks, justjoan

I bought the Breville with a 20 percent off coupon from Bed, Bath Beyond a year or so ago, and have been very happy with it. At first, I wasn't sure I wanted a toaster oven with a computerized front panel, since the one on our Dakor microwave craps out all the time, but I have had absolutely =zilch= issues with the Breville. I recommend it.

Ditto. I actually have to remind myself that sometimes it is more efficient to use the actual oven - for multiple dishes at one time, etc.

We bought a Hamilton Beach with rotisseri and convection features a few months ago. We have not used either feature yet but LOVE this oven. It has dials and no electronic controls. Heats up uber fast and is big enough for our reheats and small item cooking. It is pretty big but does not seem to use a lot of volts. It was under $90.

Still loving our Hamilton Beach oven EXCEPT for baking cookies, cakes and brownies. I tried both the convection and regualar settings and the baked goods-especially brownies and cakes- are raw in the middle and burnt around the edges.

I was given a West Bend convection one to try out and review for my blog. Its a nice model for the price and it fits 12 inch pizzas. The only problem is that the back of it has a bump out to accommodate the pizza so it takes up way too much counter depth. It is cheaply made but for 90 bucks not a bad deal for a convection one. The other issue is the timer. It is really loud as it ticks down the time. It is actually louder than the convection fan which was surprisingly quiet. I moved it to my man cave in the basement for pizzas and snacks.

We have an older Cuisinart that we really like (so much so that the newer West Bend didn't make the cut in our kitchen). We have had it for about 7 years no with no complaints at all.

I've had the larger Breville for over 1/2 year now. I use it a lot more than the old conventional toaster oven, and the large oven finds itself being used much less. Build quality and timed/temperature presets are excellent.

We have had the larger Breville for several weeks now. So far, so good. Unlike most toaster ovens it does make toast well. Over the weekend I made roasted Brussel's Sprouts in it while the main oven was in use. Its great for stuff like this. Roasted Cauliflower is next. Like the broil feature on this oven as well. I find we are using the toaster oven in one way or another for most breakfasts and dinners.

We have had several other types of toaster ovens in the past and they have all conked out after a year or so. This one at least feels solid, so I am hopeful. As stated above, the build quality and temperature setting mechanisms seem excellent.
