Maybe the approach to rice differs between Chicago and Southern/downstate Illinois, C2 !!
One thing I should note that I failed to note earlier: the rice we ate with butter, sugar and sometimes cream, was leftovers. We'd have had rice as the side the evening before, for example, and mom would have made the batch double. That way she insured that we had enough for leftovers.
I spent lots of youth-time in Granite City (my mom's and my birthplace), which is a
distinctively Southern town, with all the known plusses and minuses that entails, especially in the rigidly segregated early 50s of my youth.
