Just moved to Glen Ellyn and am trying to avoid the truly sad Jewel/Dominick's scene out here. I found Whole Foods in Wheaton and Trader Joes in GE, along with the huge Mexican supermercado on North Ave and Main St (Glendale Heights?). Anything else out there that is worth the trip?

In your own back yard check out the McChesney and Millerstore strictly for their meat department and butcher service. Old school and full service. Bende'son Rt 38 is also nice for Eastern European stuff including lots of nice smoked, cured and encased meats.

Head north up 53 to Lake, turn right and Caputo's will be on your left just after Mill st. A quick search of this forum will get you a ton of information on this great store.

I get some staples at the Middle Eastern Market on Roosevelt in Lombard. I wish I could remember the cross street. It's not easy to see from the Roosevelt but it is next door to the store with the big "puppies" sign, on the north side of the road. I think it's called Mediterranean Market. Mostly I get Lebanese olives, French feta, and canned staples that I'd otherwise have to buy on Kedzie. They carry Halal meat and a good variety of lamb. There's also another Halal butcher (Al Wahid) further East on Roosevelt but I haven't shopped there.

There's a "deli" on Crescent across from the train station. He carries Boars Head meats and a small variety of imported packaged goods. Lots of high school students go there for sandwiches.

Cabernet & Co. on Main street for wine and beer.

    Hope this helps.

Next to Trader Joe's is a Binny's. They have a good cheese selection, as well as wine & beer.

    Sam's Wine & liquor near Butterfield & I355 has a similar setup.

Also Frankie's Deli behind Yorktown mall in Lombard has a decent Italian selection.

It's a bit of a drive from Glen Ellyn, but Nature's Best in Westmont (Cass/Maple) has very good produce at much cheaper prices than Whole Foods, a bunch of ethnic brands, and above-average lamb.

Thanks for all of the recs. One thing I find strange about GE is how early everything closes. The deli on Crescent closes at 6pm, same with McChesney & Miller. Bende closes at 3:30, not sure why that is. Basically, given my work schedule, I cannot get to any of these places on weekdays. And then most of the other stores in GE, food or otherwise, aren't even open at all on Sundays. No wonder half of the spaces are empty in downtown GE.

You'll find that most GE businesses (in the downtown area) operate in the "dark ages" and cater to those who do not work full time (if you can do it, more power to ya!). Retail in GE has been declining for some time; owners are jacking up rents because the property values have soared in recent years.

We live nearby and generally don't shop in the general Wheaton/Glen Elly/Winfield area, except for Binny's and Trader Joe's. We hit Mexican markets in West Chicago (produce and some meats) and head up to Lake in the Hills for our butcher. I've heard good things about M&M but just can't get there when they're open (and refuse to battle weekend shoppers).

I know a great accountant in GE. Let me know if you need one.

McChesney&Miller falls IMO into the "why pay less" category. You can get equivalent quality meat, at lower prices, at:

    Wheaton Meat Market
    310 S. Main
    Wheaton

    City Meat Market
    790 Royal St. George #127
    Naperville

If you want the Lobel's "price is no object" level of quality, go to:

    Kreger's
    605 N. Ellsworth
    Naperville

And finally, here's a grocery store with an outstanding meat counter, located in a strip mall that includes Trader Joes, Great Harvest Bread, Succulent Seafood, and Cabernet&Company. All are open evenings.

    Casey's Foods
124 W. Gartner (corner of Washington and Gartner)
    Naperville

I would second Casey's - our family has gone to the Western Springs location for meat for special occasions for about 10 years now. Both my parents nad I used to go for more routine stuff, but their prices have risen and we find that Costco serves our daily needs fine. But if I am having company, I will go to Casey's.
