A while back I was fortunate to live in Florence for a couple of months during the fall. Amongst all the great food and wine I was exposed to, I was fortunate to get to experience the fresh olive oil of Tuscany. You know, the ecto cooler colored olive oil that you can't see through.

Well, those days are now behind me, but I recently started to wonder if anyone in Chicago imports the fresh olive oil (within a short period of time of being pressed). Traditionally the olives are pressed right around now.

Anyone know of anywhere in Chicago to pick up some?

If you can't find it in a local store, you might try Howard Case. I get a can of Nuovo from him every year. Last week he was in Italy selecting the best and I hope to be getting my shipment soon. He supplies many San Francisco restaurants. It ain't cheap, but if you've had the real thing, you know it is worth it.

Around here, gourmet shops and groceries (e.g. Fox & Obel) are a better bet than the Italian specialty stores, though as the masses slowly discover the virtues of high quality olive oil, I expect we'll start to see more and more high-end, high-priced oils appearing here, including hopefully some well handled new oils.
