My mom is visiting in a week. She grew up here around 95th and Cicero (way back when). I just recently moved here. She's always telling me about the german rye bread they always had as kids. I've found many good rye breads, but she is looking for one that has "caraway seeds in the bread and kosher salt on the top". I would love to have a loaf or two waiting around for her when she steps off the plane! I live near the green line Clinton stop and do not own a car, so public transportation access would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

ps I have finally come out of lurker mode. This board has been a great source of food knowledge.

Try Kauffman's in Skokie. I'm not 100% sure they have caraway/salt rye, but they do have both varieties individually, so a combo is not out of the question. Kauffman's is located very close to the Skokie Swift station.

Don't know about the Kosher Salt, but Weber Bakery makes a very good rye bread with seeds, much like Kedzie Bakery, Sixta's, Tuzik's, and Hoefken's that I grew up with on the southwest side. They also have outstanding kolaczki, the round style with a ton of fruit.

You might give the Marketplace on Oakton a call. They deal with a wide variety of good bakeries and have been very helpful to me in the past when I have given them a bit of notice.

Thanks for the info. I will follow up with your suggestions. I'm also looking into finding a recipe and trying it that way, but would love to find something "already done". Even though she doesn't know it yet, my mom says thanks also!
