I've never seen or heard of this, but am now on the hunt.

Does anyone know where I could purchase this in the Chicagoland area?

I have a car, so distance isn't a huge issue.

    TIA!

Are you looking for "ice cream" made of rice milk? Whole Foods, I believe, sells some from Rice Dream.

Yes! Excellent. I thought I read something somewhere about Rice Dream making "ice cream", but now you've confirmed it.

    Thank you!

Here's their website, with a product locator. I've seen it at regular grocery stores as well.

Rice Dream is okay, but for non-dairy desserts, my favorite really is the Soy Delicious brand. They have more "gourmet" flavors, and overall, a more ice-cream like product. You'd also find this at Whole Foods.

When I really want to treat myself, I get some La-Loos Goat Ice Cream - it is lactose free, and their Molasses Tipsycake flavor is delicious- a little bit like molasses cookies, it has that lovely balance of sweet/salty. Its much kinder on my my belly than cow-dairy products.

Rice Dream is probably what you're after, but I've never enojyed it when I've had it. If you're vegan (or shopping for a vegan), getting something soy based is usually better. I think Temptation "Ice Creams" taste OK... I've had chocolate and chocolate-chip cookie dough. I'll be honest, these taste terrible in comparison to real ice cream, but they're a step up from Rice Dream.

If Lactose Intolerance is the case, you could also try Frozen Yogurts, which contain live and active cultures that essentially eat up most of the lactose. Its been found that most of the remaining lactose in yogurt is digested by bacteria in the intestines. I like the Haagen-Dazs alright, and some Ben and Jerry's flavors.

A third option is sorbet - Ben & Jerry's used to have a fantastic vegan chocolate sorbet that I can't find...

It's not vegan, but Haagen Dazs chocolate sorbet is really, really good...if you've gotta choose sorbet over ice cream. :D
