Can anyone recommend good butchers and/or fishmongers in NW IN? I've been sufficing with what the local Meijer's has to offer, but I'd love to find a quality butcher and fishmonger in the region.

    Thanks in advance...

Did you ever find one, dfawley? I'd love to find the same thing. Or perhaps just a fishmonger on the southside.

The Beef Mart in Valpo has good quality and special order meats.

I'm still looking for a fish market......

No, I never did. Now I live in Elkhart, IN, and haven't found one here, either. When I want good seafood now I suck it up and get it Fedexed.

I was always very happy with the butchers at:

    Welch’s Stop & Shop
    11333 W 95th Pl, St John, IN
    (219) 365-8190

Great service, and some nice house-made sausage. After moving from the area, I haven't been back there for about 2 years -- but I suspect things have not changed.

    Hi,

An old fashioned butcher shop who make the Bolshevik sausage amongst other sausages. They also make chorizo to the recipe of a local church's since the 1930's. They also sell cuts I don't usually see like pork steak. If someone becomes a regular there, then please report back on the hits and misses.

I was a lot less impressed with Howard and Sons, which had overall higher prices than Piatak. There was also not the same level of made on premises sausage witnessed at Piatak.

BeefMart in Valparaiso is good but no fish to speak of. The best deal for both fish and meat is Costco. If you want a road trip then go to Gunthorp farm for the pork, duck, or chicken.
Find good food and eat it.

As Cathy2 did above, I'd recommend Piatak's, the longtime Gary butcher now located in Merillville. I've purchased mainly sausages (generally excellent, especially considering the price) but the fresh meats look good. And they have a giant cow out front.

Howard & Sons has a giant cow too but it just isn't as good a store as Piatak's.

I don't know if it will meet all your needs but you should have a look at Fisherman's Choice on Chicago's East Side. You won't find sushi-grade tuna at this Mexican market but most of the stock is pretty fresh and the prices are fair. It's well worth going early as they tend to sell out of many items. You can get a fish dinner at the lunch counter at the front of the store.

Almost directly across the street is Commercial Fish. I generally prefer Fisherman's Choice but it's worth a stop to see what looks best where.

A few doors north is La Fruteria, a nice Afro-Hispanic market. I never purchased any meat there (if you need a cow hoof or penis, this is the place) but they have a fine selection of tubers, hot sauces, dried fish and plenty more. La Fruteria has a little taqueria and juice bar next to the meat counter.
